Installed windows xp - no cd drive?

I spent the day installing windows xp on this computer. Unfortunally it totally failed and i've got my windows 98 back. For some weird reason my computer didn't acknowledge the cd rom drive (or what's the english word for it) anymore. Installation gave problems, it wanted to copy things of the cd, but I couldn't select the cdrom drive (it didn't excist). After some hard work I got windows xp installed but I was left with no cd rom. When I restarted my computer I could open/close the cd rom but when windows was launced my cd rom drive was totally gone. I can't even add it as hardware. I did have the cd rom drive in dos though.

I have no idea what caused this, we tried many things but no luck. All there is left might be some compatibility problem with the other hardware, like the motherboard. Or something. Anyway, I've got my old windows 98 back. (we used new hard drives instead of formatting the old ones) But it was a complete waste of my time.

Everybody I've talk to have never heard of this problem before. Does anybody here have heard of this happening to somebody else?

Check if your computer hardware is compatible with Windows XP. I know that when it was first released, there were all sorts of compatbility issues.

Thanks for that advice, I'll do that (or better said, I'll have my dad do that, I don't know anything about hardware ) Let's hope I can easily fix this, because I really want windows xp.

Just a little update. We tried installing xp again. We tried everything you can possible think of and my computer is just not ready for xp. So I'm going to reinstall 98. Just one small problem here, my computer sort of died so I don't have a computer right now. Tomorrow my computer is going to intensive care and we are going to make a new frankenstein. *it's alive, alive!* :P My poor computer.
