DSL Connection
I've been having problems with my phone jack which my dsl modem is connected. All through the day, i will lose the connection, get it back, lose it again so on. If i pug it straight into another jack, it will work for weeks at a time. I think i've fixed it, but to be sure, i want to monitor the connection for a day or so while i am away from my computer. I was wondering if you knew of a program that would tell me certain times when my connection is lost and regained. Any help is greatly appreciated

What i want to do, is show my dad that i'm not crazy. He's telling me (which makes perfect sence to me too) that the fact that we wired up this jack 3 years ago, it makes no sence for it not to work now. And everytime i show him, it will work fine. We just ran a pone cord from another jack, and stripped the wires and hooked it into a new jack behind my bedroom door. It worked fine back in the dial-up years. I'm wondering if its just because the DSL modem requires a much better connection, and that connection was never good in the first place?

actually the problem is just in lan card and modem! try to call up your customer services of the dsl, but make sure that you see that theres no problem to your lan card. i recommend you to use separate good quality lan card for your dsl cause built in are near for static or what we could ground.. beleive me..

Thanks, but unless its the modem, then i've tried 3 diffrent lan cards. If i plug it straight into the jack in the living room and use my wireless router, i won't evr lose it, but if i use the jack in my room, its varied. But we've changed that jack twice, changed the plug in the living room twice. The only other possibility we can figure out is the cord on the wall, but its worked fine since november with the DSL and 2 years before that with dial-up.

if you've tried troubleshooting your PC or LAN connection, whether physical or internal issues, then the problem could be your provider... I've experience having several disconnections in one day. Everything is working good, My modem, lan cards, etc. then i called the dsl provider to ask about their connection and they told me that they're having connection problem... Can't do anything but to wait until connections would work well.

Or maybe yet it really depends in your area. Sometimes the connection in a certain area is strong sometimes some areas are not suitable for DSL connection that is why it gets disconnected for unknown reasons.

You can use tools such as WhatsupGold to monitor your connection (it pings the ip, and shows when it wasn't pingable. Just ping your gateway, and you'll know)
DSL goes over the phone network, which is copper. It depends on the quality of copper, if your DSL connection is ok. Next to that the speed you can get depends on how far away your house is from the phone exchange box. Some telco's claim to give you 8 Mb but when your house is too far away, and the copper is not good enough, you won't get it. |

Full clarification is: http://www.epanorama.net/documents/t...sl_filter.html However, every dsl provider should provide this by default to you when they deliver the dsl connection. I worked for one myself in the past, and can confirm it's normal practice. |

well, thanks for the help, but i was actually asking a jack question, i'm pretty sure its just the cheap telephone wire we are using to run a 200ft cable. Its thin, but when i hook up with a 3 ft to the jack, it works great. So, i'm just gonna leave it like it is through my wireless router in the livingroom.
