Avast is completely free for homeusers, you just need to register (free registration that is).
Also SpywareGuard might be ok to have. Btw: anyone know what's a good, free and easy to use firewall? I used Sygate before, but then the "Norton company" took over, and I hate them...

AVG is free...

AVG Anti-Virus and Internet Security - Welcome (as you probably know)
...and they just recently came out with a companion anti-spyware package for their anti-virus

Both are downloaded as 30-day "free-trials" fully operational, then, after 30 days, the trial period expires and you get "limited functionality" freeware. Mostly, the "limited functionality" means you can't automate two things: scans and updates. For both, you have to scan, manually, and you have to update definitions, manually. DO IT!

Another freebie for antivirus is open-source clamwin Free Antivirus for Windows - Open source GPL virus scanner

It's important to have a firewall: among the best is the freebie comodo SSL Free Firewall Two Factor Authentication Products from Comodo

A Unique FREE peer to peer virus checker

A Unique FREE peer to peer virus checker

Hello I wonder if anyone would like to try out a new type of virus checker, it currently can detect over 100,000 threats, and I have the data for 1.2 million. Its a new concept as it gives end users the ability to add their own viruses to the engine. Obviously not all users can do this, but most techies with a reasonable understanding of windows could.

It uses somthing called shape technology more can be found out about that on CyberSight Software Limited however the new home free version of this new technology is found here...

GUI2.COM Advanced Threat Detection

Email me if you have any questions or suggestions on how to make this better for everyone. Oh, and by the way the new picture virus from skype was added to this in under 5 minutes and it was the first AV product to detect and remove the virus.

Happy hacking!
Dave
