Lenovo or Acer - Who's the #3 PC Maker?
via Yahoo! Finance:
Lenovo retained its spot as the world's No. 3 PC maker in the second quarter, according to figures released Thursday by research firm IDC.
But another research company, Gartner, gave the company's Taiwanese rival, Acer, the edge.
Chinese-owned Lenovo, which claims a world headquarters in Morrisville though its stock trades in Hong Kong, had 8.2 percent of the worldwide PC market, according to IDC. Acer had 8.1 percent.
But Gartner figures give Acer an 8.1 percent market share, while Lenovo came in at 8.0 percent.
Either way, the figures aren't good news for Lenovo, which has been in a seesaw battle with Acer for the world No. 3 spot behind Hewlett-Packard and Dell. The company had fallen behind Acer in the first quarter but reclaimed its position in the second quarter with a solid performance.
And Acer has a major advantage moving forward: It recently closed on the acquisition of California PC maker Gateway. That will grow Acer's market share in the U.S.
It also hurts Lenovo in Europe, where it had been eyeing a purchase of Dutch PC maker Packard Bell. Gateway, however, owns the right of first refusal to any Packard deal, and it recently said it's made a binding offer to purchase the company.
Lenovo employs about 1,300 in Morrisville.
Personally, I have a Lenovo laptop... but it's been having problems lately, especially trying to go to sleep. Maybe it's time for a new one...
