Modem Detection Problem in Windows 2000

I have a query on External Modem in Windows 2000 OS,
Everytime i connect to net using this 56K External D-Link Modem (Dialup), it says modem not present and so i have to everytime detect Modem from device manager and reinstall it on the com port. Is this because in Windows 2000, modem has to be ON while the machine starts. Because i start the modem after machine gets started .
Please help me out on this qyery

riteshdedhia,

As always, make sure you've got the correct software for that modem and make sure it's installed. If that's already the case, then I think you're on the right track with the theory that the modem needs to be on when the computer is turned on.

I had that problem in the accounting department where I work. An employee needed to dial in to our bank using an external modem, but she kept forgetting to have it on when she turned her computer on. Her results were a lot like what you are describing.

The solution I came up with was to just leave all of her equipment turned on and turn it on or off with the power strip. That way, you know the modem will be on when the computer comes on. It took awhile for her to get used to turning on the power strip instead of the computer, monitor, modem, and printer, but she eventually re-trained herself.

Hope this helps.

Hi commonsensetech,
Thanks for the reply..i also came to this conclusion that after windows 2000, all operating systems of windows required modems or printers to be On when the system starts as they are connected to parallel port(com port). if connected to USB port, then modem can be kept OFF during system start.
