Which is better AMD Athlon 64 or Pentium D?

I went to both of their sites and several information pages and they keep saying all this mumbo jumbo about the both of them. And knowing most computer hardware companies they can and usually will make a big deal out of something that is not very important. So, I'd like to let all of you (who seem to know everything computer wise) help me figure this whole thing out. Which is actually better. Oh, I almost forgot, the reason for this is because I'm looking into new computers and such and thought it might be wise to get a good processor.

amd 64 vs pentium d

ummm

did you mean to compare the amd 64 x2 series with the pentium d which is a dual core chip....

the amd athlon 64 does come in a single core model....

my vote goes to the amd64x2 series....

just found something interesting....

That has got to be the most ridiculous thing ever. I can see a merger, but from a business aspect, how does this benefit either company. If this is true, I foresee them merging in the near furture.

I would like to use an AMD 64, but at the moment I only have a crappy 32 bit thing I'm wanting to upgrade it in time for the release of Windows Vista

Right now the wise thing is to go with AMD.

We will start to see some real competition when Intel will drop Netburstentium 4 line and launch their new processors based on Pentium M architecture

AMD is simply the choice for me. I have my Athlon 64 3500+ for about 2 months and its given me top notch performance in evey aspect. I personally hate Intel, their proccesers are more expensive and give lower performance, when Vista comes out i definatly get it.
