How to deal with your greatest fear?

What will you do if the time comes you face your worst fear?
Me, I just be brave to face it...

Many people told me what they would do if they were drafted into the Service back during the Vietnam war. Most of them didn't do what they thought they were going to do.

I've always taken that as, you don't know until you are tested. You literally have to walk a mile in their shows to know what's going on. On a personal level, I have been amazed and and sometimes disappointed in myself in life.

The disappointments get fewer as we grow older, having experienced things we did wrong and learned from them.

Having faced my "use to be" biggest fear, I can tell you... Everything depends on the situation, if it caught you off guard, what type of mentality you have, have you ever trained with "fight or flight". There are a multitude of things to prepare for. What I say is... Keep your head on a swivel.

My biggest fear was being attacked by a person with a knife. Guns don't scare because statistically, 97% of armed robbers are not trained in retention, therefore you can , with minimal training and at a decent 10ft range, disarm an attacker faster than he can pull his firearm while turning the tables to give you the advantage.

Now a knife is a completely different story. Edged weapons can be made of anything, concealed anywhere, and are legal for the most part. The untrained attacker just as deadly as the highly trained attacker. The main concern being, a gunman I would want as close to me as possible, so that i can dissarm him, and submiss him. Edged weapon attacker, you want to be as far as possible. There is no sure way to train to prevent being cut or penetrated. But there are only limited things you can do. Alot of time you don't even know you were stabbed until after the "fight/attack."

Basically, being attacked by an edged weapon attacker, you have very limited possiblities to live, let alone defend yourself.

What i did... i felt the pressure sting in my side, i backed away quickly with my hands in front of me, i never stopped backing away, he rushed which gave me an advantage, though i was injured, his inertia was headed for me with a lot less capability to stop or change angle than i had. He swung the blade for my face(which was actually pretty lucky, they normally go for the body) i was in mid-backstep, he missed, i grabbed the arm at the elbow, dislocated the shoulder by shoving my shoulder in his as hard as possible, got the knife hand limp, kicked the knife away, and proceeded to wear on the shoulder. Cops, hospital, court, jail. But i was very very very lucky.

I teach hand to hand combat in the Marine Corps. I teach edged weapons courses as well. I teach the same exact move in every class. Back away, keep your footing, and never stop backing away. If that isn't possible, you stay on his parry side(away from the knife) Never grab the knife hand, always look at his chest, the knife hand can move faster than your brain can copy that picture to your eyes. All in all... run like hell.

I guess fear is not really a bad thing.. So i always face it.. Because facing and admitting you’re afraid of something can be quite enlightening. It gives you a chance to assess what is holding you back...
