Sex sites are to get their own .xxx domain creating a "virtual" red light district on the wibbly wobbly web.

Those behind the new top level domain (TLD) claim it will create a "clearly identifiable area of the internet that will empower families and help protect children and others from unwanted or inappropriate content".

Critics point out that the existence of this virtual red light district will do nothing to stop adult content from popping up elsewhere on the net.

But with a global adult industry worth an estimated $3bn and growing at a fair old lick this attempt at self-regulation is being touted as a way for pornographers to operate on the web.

Those in favour of the scheme say that the new .xxx domain - approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) - would be self-regulated by "responsible adult-entertainment website operators".

The online adult-entertainment industry said it wants to create an "identifiable space with which its members can elect to associate themselves and wherein they can responsibly self-organize and create guidelines to promote credible self-regulation".

You know, these pornographics websites publish their advertisements with the motivation of targetting children...
I don't want to go into detail, but I knew this boy of eleven years, who took his dad's credit card details to obtain membership at a certain porn site...
Anyways, it is obvious that the porn sites which already have domains with '.com' and similar extensions are not going to switch over and abandon their "bustling" domains. IMO, .xxx is going to be very much useless. If anything, children will receive access to more porn.

I recently used "lolpr0n.xxx" as an example address NOT to visit if you want to avoid spyware. It will probably be a real site soon.

It would be useful for avoiding NWS material if most/all porn ended up at .xxx domains, but since this is the Internet, people are going to do whatever they want, as usual. And in my opinion, it wouldn't be worth restricting the freedom of web users at large to help random soccer moms prevent their teenage sons from fapping.

Maybe it might've been a good idea if porn sites switched from their already established domains, but what about those disgusting "shock sites" like lemonparty, goatse, tubgirl, etc. ? The internet will always have sick and demented gay ass shit such as those.

Anyway, I doubt any of you care, but I used to view lemonparty when I was bored at work and still had internet access there. IMO, it's an awesome piece of art. Old men need love too. Most of you who use Firefox would immediately close any tabs in disgust after figuring out that it's lemonparty, but I'd make haste in opening five more tabs instead. I'm crazy like that.

Update:

ICANN has again delayed the approval of the .xxx top level domain (TLD).

ICANN okays .cat ; delays approval of the .xxx TLD for the second time in two months.

The roll out of the highly controversial .xxx top level domain has been delayed indefinitely by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the nonprofit organization responsible for Internet addresses, for the second time in as many months. At the same time the agency approved .cat, which is meant for the Catalan language.

The creation of the .cat suffix has been done for individuals, organizations and companies that promote the Catalan language and culture. The language is spoken largely in certain regions of Spain and promises to unify Catalan speakers who live in France, Italy, Andorra and elsewhere. The name is expected to be operational next year.

In the meanwhile, ICANN's board of directors considered an agreement for the .xxx at the Thursday meeting but decided against taking action, directing ICANN staff to negotiate 'additional contractual provisions' with ICM Registry, the Florida company that plans to operate the domain. A representative of the ICANN also commented that the launch will not be decided until 'a future date'.

ICANN had given a preliminary approval in June for .xxx but met with opposition from conservative groups and it postponed a final decision last month after the U.S. Government stepped to look into the objections it had received.
