100Mb Broadband to be launched in UK

Drools! I want this, give me my speedy connection! Notice they haven't given us the cost of it anywhere, so it's probably crazy expensive. Oh well, I can always dream...

Quote:

UK cable company NTL will be unveiling a trial of a new service set to debut in March 2006. In special partnership with Arris and BitTorrent the trial will take place in Ashford, Kent, UK.
The trial? A 100MB broadband speed, which is officially 10 times faster then the highest speed offered by NTL’s 10Mb speed offered at the moment. With the recent take over of Telewest broadband and current talks to purchase Virgin Mobile, with this 100Mb broadband service HD video will be available, and with the use of BitTorrent these can be easily shared with official licenses in place. Now because of the 100Mb service it finally means that the UK has caught up with the rest of the world in the language of high speed broadband, with countries in both Europe and Asia that have been offering 10Mb speeds or higher for several years now. This is also helping with the push towards a HD technology service, with on demand movies very similar to Sky’s Sky+ current service. However with this new 100mb service some people are wondering will it be reliable due to the fact awhile ago people where experiencing regular connection problems with there 10Mb service however I am certain that speed nuts will be drooling and queuing up for this service. Read Press Release at Arrisi. Ntl are Still to release a press release on Ntl.com

I've still stuck with 1Mb broadband That's great new for Britain.
Does America not have high speed internet? The quote only mentions Europe and Asia.

The thing is, NTL is complete c(arp). They started charging us subscription before they even sent us our modem, and told us they were going to upgrade our line three months ago, and it still hasn't happened.

The closer you are to large population centres the more likely you are to find that the broadband you're using is really high speed. I've seen the internet 2 tests at the telecom world 2003 in Geneva and the CERN were doing landspeed records of 5.6 gigabits per second overland.

At the time they said that it was the hardware holding them back, rather than the fibre itself. That's great for the providers because it means they offer a better service and they gain capacity.

In Switzerland the connection is being upgraded to 2megabits per second.

well

well , in india , the condition is worst , some 10 to 20 cities are only having something like broadband , if u talk about electricity here , the rural areas dont have electricity for 9 hrs per day , broadband and computers are still in their dreams , also , currently i am getting 672 kbps speed , which is respectable here , the fibres are of useless quality , so dial-up connection scores just 23 kbps , its worst here!

When I went to Africa a few years ago simply having a proper floor in a room was a luxury. There is a digital divide from a logistical point of view. If you read the news then one you'll see many schemes to get these people to have a better infrastructure through satellite and radio liinks since they're cheaper than pulling cable.

In particular GSM networks are important because they allow for mobile telephony. it's not providing access to the world wide web but in countries where getting much beyond primary education is a challenge there are more urgent needs.

Firstly providing clean drinking water and electricity or creating the infrastructure needed to get at least as far as a secondary education.

As a person who doesn't live in Africa when I spent 21 days there back in 2001 I was happy not to touch a computer for 21 days. I took quite a bit of video of the various projects we worked on instead. Why write e-mails when video once you're back will do the job better.

I live about 28 miles away from Ashford! though if I did live in Ashford I'm not sure if I would get it because like Kenmcfa said NTL is pretty bad, I've heard some bad stories about them!

I was quite excited until I read the "NTL" bit. Needless to say, it'll be poor!
