PlayStation 3 costs $800
If there are some people out there right now who are in the know when it comes to what the hell is going on -- we mean EMreally going on/EM -- with Sony, it's those investment firms. But even barring their research analysts getting all kinds of privvy information from direct executive input or connections on the supply side, it's kind of funny when one of these investment firms lets loose some juicy gossip. Like that Sony's STRIKEalbatross/STRIKE [url=http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=playstation"PlayStation 3 is going to cost them $800 per unit at launch (they list $900, but apparently Lynch financial analysts can't add their own totals). $800 per unit? Doesn't sound unreasonable considering what Sony's trying to get under cram under the hood of this thing; Lynch calls it an "expensive and difficult-to-manufacture product" because of the Cell processor and Blu-ray drive, which account for the lion's share of the backend parts costs (see above). Granted, most of this analysis comes off as estimation and prediction, but we'd like to make a prediction of our own: the PS3? She's like [url=http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=kutaragi"Kutaragi's Spruce Goose. Oh she'll fly alright, but at what cost?

P.S. It's worth a reminder that game companies always sell these things at a loss at launch, so we shouldn't have to worry too much about ponying up about a grand for a PS3. Eh, maybe only six or seven hundred.
That chart is probably not taking into account the fact that sony will
likely be able to significantly reduce the cost by the time of launch,
as well as sell the unit for less than it costs to produce (a very
common practice for console game producers) br
br
Also many of those additions such as the HDD may be absent in "value packs" that they may release.br
br
Anyways... I am sure that Sony knows that an 800 dollar console is
going to completely foil their attempts at competeing with lower cost
consoles such as the xbox 360 and will make adjustments.br

^^^ Couldn't agree morebr
br
Also, I'm not sure cause I didn't read it all, but they might not have
taken bulk ordering/production into consideration, which would also
significantly lower the pricesbr

I sure hope it will become much more affordable. There is no way I'm paying $800 or $900 for one. I may have to settle for one of these instead..
PS3/George Foreman Grill combo. If it costs that much, it will have to serve a dual purpose.

Ehhh...listen people, this chart only shows how much it costs to MAKE one (at this point, but that's really irrelevant), not for how much it will sell. And the rule of thumb is that consoles are sold at a loss (Every Xbox (first) sold brings losses to MS even now). Also, releasing a console at a price point higher than around 350$ would be a suicide...

When I saw that, my dreams of owning a PS3 had gone south. But I still remain optimistic about the price.

That's silly, Sony wouldn't do something like that. Everybody knows that they are gonna lose from Microsoft (Xbox 360) just because of the price diffrence.

Another reason is.. WHO IN GOOGLE's NAME IS GONNA BUY AN PLAYSTATION FOR $900,-?

Just more to add to the reason of why I do not want one. There is only so much fun you can get out of a game, and making a better console to play that game doesn't help me at all. I can have just as much fun on an Xbox, or even a playstation. Sometimes I desire a little less graphics anyhow. Gotta make sure it's not your real life, at times.

I have my computer for the rest, which is slightly better than the ops shown there.
