Senate Approves Patriot Act Renewal

My Way News[/url]]The Senate on Thursday voted overwhelmingly to renew the USA Patriot Act, after months of pitched debate over legislation that supporters said struck a better balance between privacy rights and the government's power to hunt down terrorists.

The 89-10 vote marked a bright spot in President Bush's troubled second term as his approval ratings dipped over the war in Iraq and his administration's response to Hurricane Katrina. Renewing the act, congressional Republicans said, was key to preventing more terror attacks in the United States.

Agreed. We're losing our first ammendment rights people!
From what I understand about the Patriot Act, a government official could be monitering this forum right now, and shut it down because it's "an imminent danger." Anything that goes against the governments views can be shut down, at the governments discretion. That's too much power in one branch of the government.

yah

While they could be monitoring our forums chances are they aren't to worried about this. The patriot act while it gives them that authorityto do so the main reason for this is so that they canbe watching suspected terrorists. And believe me something like this wouldn't get shut down without a huge legal battle. They don't want the patriot act so they can go around having fun, it's for the safety of the whole US. How come everyone complains about part of their freedom to privacy being taken away but then when we lose our right to bear arms no one says a damn thing. i'd much rather have the government watching what I'm doing than lose my right to bear arms.

Where the hell are you getting that from? The name doesn't really matter as long as it's doing what needs to be done.

Read the second amendment again. "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. " It's vague that it could be taken in many ways, but my interpretation is that there is a right to bear arms to form a militia. And since when are your second amendment rights infringed? You can even buy assault weapons now, which have no hunting purpose!

Why people still insist on this "militia" joke?
In modern times no militia would stand a chance against military... (at least in "civilised" parts of the world)

well, it's not like anyone would declare war on the US and attack us on our home soil. No one has the capabilities. So there's no real need to own a gun, unless you hunt. Which you definately need assault weapons for...or pistolsfor that matter...

Obviously you haven't been to the slums of USA like Nashville and such. Going to some parts of that place without a gun would literally be suicide. Drug dealers are inhabitingour country like mosquitoes, I swear it. Yesterday, I got held up in traffic because there was a car on fire. I figured a bad accident or something of the sort. Nope, guy was cooking crystal meth in his trunk while driving down the road.

You obviously haven't been to California.....The only way you can own an assault rifle is if you owned it before the ban. My dad has one, and I find assault weapons fun to shoot. I'm in the military and shoot them often but it never gets old. Why would people want to own a freakin $200,000.00 dollar car? Theres no purpose in it really it's just nice to have and some people find them fun. If you have the right to bear arms then have whatever rifle you want as far as I'm concerned. As long as you aren't hurting people, and taking everyones rifles away only hurts the law abiding citizens. Because a criminal doesn't follow the law to get rid of their rifle it just makes it easier for them to target citizens who did follow the law and got rid of their weapons.
