If you don't like using IE, get the Firefox extension.

I usally just send e-mails to myself. It is easy... Also there is that "Gmail Drive" (google it...) that you can install on your computer, use your gmail account as Mass Storage.

I used that for a while.
The problem was, when I uploaded files, my POP3 client automatically downloaded them again to my computer....I was left with three copies of my files. One in the original computer folder, one in GMail, and the other in the email client...

Yes, that can be a bit of a nuisance.
That's why I only upload a bunch of files at a time, then check into the account to change the POP3 setting to 'for messages from now on'.
Or I just catch them with a POP3 checker, and 'mark all read'.

Just save them as a draft, there i no need for a notebook. Google seems insistant on launching pointlesss services recently I have noticed - notebook, calendar, google Moon (you can see it in greater detail by looking out the window)

I like the notebook.

Then you'd have to go into Gmail, compose new message, save, close Gmail, go back to original page.
Just clicking a small link in the bottom right hand corner is much more convenient.

And then, there's also the other aspect of these things being online- in that you can opt to share your calendar,
or notebook with others, in ways that would be unwise with your Gmail account.
