Have you chatted with him before, using Gmail chat?
If he does have "only with people I approve" selected, he should only have to okay you once, and then you should be able to see his online status when he's logged in. (You can be online and not logged-in.) When you request a chat for the first time, a mesage goes to his inbox, saying "X wants to chat- click if you approve". Maybe he missed that message. Then again, it could always just be a glitch. |

It's on the "Chat" tab in Settings (from the top toolbar in the Gmail account).
The two selections are: "Automatically allow people I communicate with often to chat with me and see when I'm online" and "Only allow people that I've explicitly approved to chat with me and see when I'm online". If your friend has the second one checked, you would have to select him on your contact list, and choose "Chat", which would send him an email giving him the option to approve or not. |
