mondine is an unknown quantity at this point
As you say, you can't use the Drafts folder in this way.
But perhaps if you state the reason you want to do this (to save a copy of templates, sent messages, or whatever),
someone may come up with an alternative way to accomplish it.

This is really a weird situation. If you have a message that you send often, you don't seem to be able to label it or star it as a draft. I've tried a few different things to try to mark drafts, but once they are sent, they are removed from the drafts section and any applied stars or labels disappear.

Unfortunately, the only thing I can think of if you want to have messages handy to send later after they are sent is this: Send the draft, then go to your "Sent mail" and star the message. Whenever you need to send the message again, go to your starred section and forward the message. Unfortunately, you're going to have to remove the forward header and tag in the subject.

I can see where you would want to do this and Gmail doesn't make it very easy. It'd be nice to be able to send a message and save it as a draft. Maybe someone has a better solution than the star and forward method. It's really unfortunate that you have such little control over what happens to drafts once you send them.

You can suggest a change in how Gmail handles drafts here.
