Is it possible to put a patterned or colored background on my outgoing gmail emails?

as of now nope......gmail offers a rich text format in which background color is not there n it doesn't support scripts.........so better use some pop3 mail clients for it.

Pages with images for backgrounds are nasty anyway.

Oh, yes, more fonts would be good. It's not necessary, of course, but it may be usefull once and a while.
And the solution to your background image problem is what was said by luckymurari, just using a POP client for your mail.
