when you register for an account how do you get a @gmail.com account? it always comes up with @googlemail.com. Just wondering...

Google have been involved in a dispute regarding the Gmail trademark in the UK. Another company has claimed rights to the Gmail name. We have tried to resolve this dispute through negotiations, but our efforts have failed. Therefore, Google can not use the @gmail in the UK or some other countries.

There have been a number of people that have reported success in getting around this 'problem' by registering using a proxy based in a 'Gmail' area (like the US).

You'd probably have to clear your Google cookie aswell.
