Question from a Newbie -- Can I send Gmail from Europe?
Hi,
I am a new Gmail user with a question. First a bit of background. I use Microsoft Outlook to manage my email and integrate it with the other Microsoft products, so using a purely web-based email service is not an option for me. Therefore, my email service must support POP3/SMTP facilities. I travel a LOT and my current ISP (Comcast) just transferred me to TimeWarner/RoadRunner which won't let me send emails if my PC is not attached directly to their network. It seems that their SMTP server checks this carefully. The told me that every time I go to a new hotel and use that hotel's Internet service, I must contact the local ISP that the hotel uses in order to get access to that ISP's SMTP server if I want to send email while on the road. This is obviously a really painful process, especially when traveling to foreign countries where tech support is sporadic and often in a foreign language. I just opened a Gmail account because it seems to offer a realistic solution to this problem. It appears that the Gmail server will permit me to login from just about anywhere that I can get an Internet connection. That means that I can take my laptop to hotels around the country (or the world), connect to the Internet via the link the hotel offers, and send/receive email through the Gmail service. Does anyone know if this is true? If not, what are the limitations? Any other comments or observations would be appreciated. Thanks for your guidance here. Phil Becker |

It's indeed true. You can use the Gmail SMTP server for this. Of course you'll need an account there, which can be used to log in to the server. But once that is done, you can send mail from any account, using the Gmail SMTP service. I've exactly the same "problem", and I'm solving it in this way.

GoogleMail.com ???
Interesting. Do you know if this means that the SMTP server is also called "smtp.googlemail.com]? in the States, it is "smtp.gmail.com]. If in the UK it is "googlemail" that means that everyone from the States that visits the UK with their laptop and access email with Microsoft Outlook will need to set up another account in Outlook. I wonder if this means that we will need a separate account with Google. No big deal, but a bit annoying.
Also, do you know about the rest of Europe? Thanks, Phil Becker |
