Gmail Space
Hi,
I use the Gmail Gspace Firefox extension to back up a very important folder of about 12 MB, every few days. It contains confidential information. It seems to work. It's reasonably fast, and it's convenient. It seems too good to be true, which worries me. Meanwhile, I've looked around the Web, but I feel like I'm getting rather vague information about Gmail Space. As far as I can tell, Google looks inside your Gmail for advertising opportunities, and inserts them in your messages, which otherwise remain private. I have a Gmail address now, I guess, but don't need it, don't use it. As far as I can tell, Gmail Space is intended primarily to archive old email messages. But the files I'm uploading are not old email messages. Some are files that contain a combination of code and data. Any attempt to insert advertising would corrupt them. Is this use of Gmail Space something that Google is willing to allow, or even encourage? Or is it sort of "cheating"? Is Google going to try to insert advertising? Meanwhile, how secure is this confidential data? (I understand there is some concern that Google itself might abuse access to data like this someday. Let's skip that topic, for now.) Finally, I tried uploading a password-protected Stuffit Archive of the same data, for the sake of greater security, but I couldn't upload it. The icon for the archive was dimmed out. Is this an issue with the FireFox Gspace extension, or an issue with Gmail Space per se? Thanks in advance, Tim |

Indeed. None of your files will be edited. They MIGHT be opened by Gmail, to search for the text to provide related ads, but none of the information inside will be edited.
About the Gspace thing: no one knows if Google will block this somehow, someday. Until now it has been working for over a year I think, and I don't see why they should all over sudden change this. You never know though, since it's not a feature provided by Google itself. |
