www.gmail.co.uk site sold to non-Google related compan

i saw this on the google news about a week ago, it appears that gmail.co.uk has been register to a company other than google. Does this mean that Google cant offer it's email service to people of the UK. I dont know, probably they can still but people of the UK will still have to type in gmail.com! I think this is weird that Google didnt protect it's interest by registering all gmail related sites before they released the beta gmail service!

what do you guys think?

It does sounds wierd.. companes like google usualy register every domain name they can think of that has some relation to their product.
even mistypes of google lead you to google.com.

yup... I also saw this the other day. I would've thought Google had already bought up all the country-specific domains they wre gonna be opening up. unless they plan to just have one big Gmail domain... hehe! or maybe they'll do it by continet. I wonder how they'd pay to get this back though, if they wanted it...

Not even Gmail actually uses Gmail.com. Google's domain is Google.com, and that's it - Gmail.com redirects you to gmail.google.com.

In any case, the vast majority of internet sites use .com, .net or .org. Even UK users often visit .com websites. .co.uk is only their country-specific TLD, and I don't think it will at all affect Gmail.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having the same domain for all countries. As intelliot pointed out the use of TLD's for each country on the net.

If you're talking about Gmails.co.uk, it's another matter!

Btw, here are the articles:

I think its kind of sad for a company the size of Google cant even make sure they get all the Gmail domain names like:
gmail.co.uk
or
gmail.net
I feel they should have been alittle more professional about that. All i can say that those co.uk and .net sites will get more hits when gmail.com goes public.
