This happened to me once or twice. I can't remember what I was doing though. After a little bit it fixed it self. I'm assuming the same has happened for your friend. If it hasn't, have him clear all his temp internet files (cookies and all) and try again...

That happened to me too before when I was getting my first account with Gmail. Do you know what internet browser is he using? The thing about cookies is true, he should clear out his cookies and maybe restart his pc. It got fixed when I tried the next day. Otherwise, it's probably Gmail's own server problems, so just try it again some other time.
