Why do people like gmail so much?

I really don't get it...ever since the launch of gmail, everybody's been hounding for an invite, but ever since I got one, I didn't think it was so special...i mean, yes, when it first came out, 1GB email was hard to find, but now...i mean, holy cow, there's so many BIG email providers out there. Granted, some of which aren't as reliable as Gmail, but there are some...but they're not catching on as fast as Gmail...why...?

There's so many out there. LIke, I found one recently which offered free 10GB with imap/pop3 which gmail can't top, and reliability beats gmail...then why is gmail still so popular? Any ideas people? Oh btw, the site is http://www.bgxmail.net

I hope somebody does answer my questions because i'm so clucless

But then, so are so many other email services....like that one i mentioned has 100% uptime....

I was thinking, perhaps it's just advertising...like why people buy more benz's than lexus's

Yes, what cvrk said, and besides, you can never go wrong with Google!
Google means excellence and exceptional service! I'd rather trust Google with their Gmail rather than a not-so-well established free e-mail address provider as there is a possibility that they are overselling.
This might not apply to you, but many of us like Gmail for it's variety and unique features like labels, contact list importing, etc.
Gmail, in my opinion, is a hundred times better than any e-mail service provider, be they paid services or free. Gmail offers POP3/SMTP support so your statement of Gmail not having the capacity to top other services with a seemingly larger array of features is wrong. Most of those service providers are overselling, that is, they are lying about what they actually provide.
Google is more than capable to topple the old contenders like Hotmail and Yahoo! with Gmail.

Gmail works with Picasa 2 and the new and improved gDrive.
There are a ton of people working behind the scenes to make this the best email solution ever, it can't fail. No one else provides a search utility. Try searching for something specific in a 10 Gbyte email account when it gets even 20 or 30 Mbytes full, it will not be fun. Remember, gMail is still in beta too, it will get much better.

What I like about gmail is the labeling emails, the conversations (I love the conversations), the fast loading times, the fact that there are no banners. Do I need to go on? I think that's enough.

Gmail is simple, the only advertisements are text, it has many features but the interface is kept simple, the archiving is done so smoothly and simple. The Gmail sounds simple aswell, like it's standard. The labeling, the speed, the interface, the simplicity, the name, the reliability of Google.
We all trust google with not selling us out to advertisers, the spam filter is easy, and it works.
Before Gmail, I used hotmail, fusemail, and even my own site's email running HiveMail.. but Gmail, overall rises. Because of Gmail, EVERY other email provider upgraded their storage space, but each one of them dont let you manage it easily, with gmail, you archive and forget, but when you need to remember, you just search!
