I was interested in knowing how the quota in Gmail was increasing, so I spent about 15 min doing a couple of calculations and, assuming that my calculations are correct, I came up with the following. I took a peek at the JavaScript code for the counter, and found out that the quota is increased by 1 MB every 24,912 seconds or every 6 hours 55 minutes and 12 seconds. The next milestone, 2075 MB, will happen on Saturday, April 9th 2005, 16:00:00 (GMT). If the quota keeps increasing at that rate, we should reach 3000 MB in about 23,666,400 seconds which corresponds to Sunday, January 1st 2006, 9:00:00 (GMT)

LOL OMG Well done! I think it has to be correct, because the 3Gb will exactly be on the 1st January 2006. Damn really, well done once again!

Wow! Are you really good at maths or something because I could never work that out.

Well done and thanks for the info!

If one were to peek at the JavaScript code, it would actually be very easy to calculate all of that. Once you get the rate of increase, it's just some basic math. Number-crunching, no more. It would have been even easier to come up with the rate of increase for the Gmail team, though I am left to wonder why they chose 9am GMT instead of precisely at the moment the new year starts.

Of course, you'd need to know JavaScript well enough to decode what is in the source. I certainly don't, though I wish I did. The math is the easy part, it's figuring out what the rate of increase that is difficult.

Then again...you could probably get fairly close to the actual rate of increase using a timer. You'd need to write down the exact number of MBs that you start timing at. Considering how slow the increase is, though, you'd have to leave the timer on for quite a while, and hope you don't pass your marker by the time you get back to check on it. Not very efficient, but it can be done if you care enough to find out how fast your capacity increases and don't know JavaScript.

Thanks for the info..It was nice of you to "Actually do it" rather than saying that it can be done blah blah..

I doubt if anyone will sit with a timer to do that!!

Ahem. You just did it also. And I'd rather have him bump an old topic than creating a new one of the same topic.

Remember: It's always better to reply to an existing topic than to create a new one.
