Question Gmail on 2 computers

Hi,

A friend of mine is on Sky (A UK ISP) and they have now teamed up with Google for supplying mail.

Now before, using normal pop servers I had him set up, so that on his laptop when he accessed his mail, he left a copy of the messages on the server, and then when he used his main PC, he downloaded and deleted them from the server as normal. He is using OE on both pcs.

Now with Google, it seems to recognise that it has sent the messages already to the laptop and will not download them to the main PC a second time.

Is there a way around this, so as to get him working as he was before.?

TIA

Tried a PM to Administrator, but got

'To be able to send PMs your post count must be 15 or greater.

Your post count is 2 momentarily and you can send PMs to Staff only.' so not sure if it went or not.....

epsteel, you need to have 15 posts before you can send PMs, so the PM didn't go through.

My suggestion is to use the new Gmail IMAP feature. This will leave mail on the server until a mail client chooses to delete it. Read this for more info on getting started with Gmail IMAP.

Intelliot.

Thank you. I thought of that as a workaround, but my friend is not that computer literate and then I would have to explain the new way of how his email will work. Ideally I'd like to leave it as it is as he is comfortable with how it works now, which was why I asked.

As Gmail does not really abide by POP3 access, I cannot see how it may be done.

The main difference between POP and IMAP is that IMAP leaves mail on the server, so it's always synchronized, no matter where you access your email from. POP should still work, though I don't think you'll be able to easily download the same messages from multiple computers.

IMAP is really the ideal solution, since it keeps things consistent across computers.

Anyone else have a suggestion?

I found one huge drawback with IMAP.

I just wanted to go into my Gmail mail to find something, and could not as my internet connection was down.

It appears IMAP just downloads headers and accesses the message from the server, or am I missing something.??

OK for BB, but a PITA for dialup.

You can contunue to use POP and not switch to IMAP if you create another GMail account so you have one for each PC. Have the main one forward all mail to the second one.

That will still leave your Sent Folders uncoordinated, however. What I do is have yet a third GMail account and set up my POP client to automatically BCC all sent mail to that third account.
