Custom from address and SMTP

I configured my Gmail to use a secondary address to send mail, and I chose this address as the default option. When I send a message using Gmail's web interface, everything works fine and the recipient sees my message as if it had been sent from the secondary address.

I've also configured Mozilla Thunderbird to receive and send messages using the Gmail account (POP and SMTP). When I send a message using Thunderbird, however, the recipient sees the message as if it had been sent from the Gmail address. In other words, the custom "from" address doesn't seem to work in this case. Is there a way to correct that?
