"but many of us will not send mail to gmail.com"

There are other points of view on Google and gmail and other activities of google. Is it born out of google becoming big or there is some sense in what they say?

Nice find cvrk3. Have you had a chance to read the article in last months Fortune Magazine? It's a must read for Google Fans. Google has become a software company and it's causing many mixed emotions with everyone in the industry. Google has also purchased a land/ building very close to Microsoft in Redmond, making it very easy to jump ship. 100 M$ employees and counting have made the switch so far. Please read the article.

Google has even had the nerve to set up an office five miles down the road from Microsoft's Redmond, Wash., headquarters. Its opening last November was supposed to be an invitation-only affair, but word spread and by 7 p.m. the place was swarming with dozens of uninvited Microsofties—casually, and sometimes not so casually, looking for work. The Google migration has gotten so bad, says a former Microsoft employee, that when he told his bosses and colleagues he was leaving earlier this year, "the first question out of their mouths was 'You're not going to Google, are you?' " (He was not.)

Indeed, four years have passed since Microsoft released a piece of software that generated the kind of buzz Google seems to generate every month.

he says, later adding, "We need to take search way beyond how people think of it today and just have it be naturally available, based on the task they want to do." For example, if you wanted to look up a factoid while you were writing a document, you might search for it without ever leaving Word.
A valid reason that google should look beyond search!!
