Why am I receiving a copy of sent emails when using web-based Gmail?

I have been using Thunderbird with Gmail. I also realize I can use web-based Gmail. My brother showed me how to configure my account so that my Gmail email address does NOT show; instead it shows me@mydomain.com... this is what the recipient sees and replies to. All works fine except that now, when I send an email to anyone@anysite.com from the web-based Gmail, it also sends a copy to my Gmail Inbox! I don't understand this or how to fix it. I don't need a copy sent to my Inbox; there is a copy in my Sent box.

Why would you want to mask your email address? It is trivial to open the message headers and see where the actual address is. And when someone hits reply their email client is using the reply to address set in the message, in this case your Gmail address, so you are wasting your time unless you have some redirect set up somewhere.

If you don't want people to have your email address then just don't email them. It's a much more certain way to keep your email address private.

Anywho, that isn't why you are getting a copy of sent messages in Thunderbird. THAT is happening because you are using POP to access Gmail. If you want it to stop you can set up and use IMAP.

Apparently, you've never heard the marketing term "branding." If the people see me@mysite.com, I am branding mysite.com, not gmail.com. It doesn't really matter to me, I just thought I would get it set up that way if possible.

I still don't understand why I am getting a copy when sending it by web-based gmail. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Actually I have heard of that. I did it the right way by setting up a Google Apps hosted account. Then people actually are getting email from me at my domain. You may have this set up as well and just don't realize it.

Again, you are getting a copy of your sent emails because you are using POP access to download your mail in Thunderbird. Switch to IMAP. You don't need to understand why, just know that this is why it is happening.

Okay, cool. Is there any disadvantage to using IMAP?

For me, there is not one down side to IMAP. You can sync your email across computers, sent messages don't show up in your inbox, your labels show in Thunderbird as folders and changes on the desktop in Thunderbird are sync'd to the server.

Once POP mail is downloaded you can't download on another computer without going through some additional steps.
