Gmail compared to Spymac and other 1 GB providers

Quote:
With a handful of new and already established email services offering free and paid email subscriptions with a massive amount of space, is Google’s Gmail worth the wait? Many websites, such as Spymac.com, already offer 1 GB of email space before Google announced its plans for 1 GB email; so what makes Gmail so special? That’s what we are about to find out. With Gmail still in the works and only selected beta testers allowed to experience it, we have compared some already existing 1 GB email services to see which one offers the best bang for the buck; and if any of these services are worth putting to rest once Gmail becomes public.

Among the sites that we will look at are known email service providers and others that are not so popular. The following email services were considered: RunBox, Walla!, SpyMac, ShireMail and Gmail. We will consider ease of use, look and feel, site speed, spam filtering capabilities and other aspects and features.

The article summed up as below:
Quote:
If you are looking for free email service with 1 GB email, I would say wait around a bit for Gmail; unless of course you are willing to sign up for any email service now and dump it once Gmail goes public. Such email services like Walla! really falls short on features. SpyMac does have a few nice features, but the lack of spam filtering is just not acceptable. Just try to imagine your current email service with no spam filter; all those pesky and unwanted emails going directly into your inbox; what a waste of time. However, if you don’t mind paying for email, then SpyMac Mail Pro is definitely for you. For under $20 US per year, you get twice the amount of features found in ShireMail, and three times the amount of space in RunBox, plus tons of extra features you are sure to love.
In one of my postings i had suggested that gmail should continue to enroll the subscibers only through invites, even after going to public. That will provide a USP for google.

Yeah, I read the article yesterday and found it very interesting (those comparatives by Flexbeta are always very well done).

I haven't tried Gmail (obviously because I couldn't find an invitation), but I know it because a friend of mine got an account. And I like it much.
I tried SpyMac and must say it didn't work for me: after creating the account the system blocked every single time I tried to get through it.
I haven't used Walla!, and I was going to do it, but after reading the article I won't do it; I'll wait till I get a Gmail invitation (I'm not in special need of a gig account ).

I had a Spymac account, and I must say the interface is not well designed, and the web interface is *very* slow. The only bearable way to use Spymac email is to use the free POP3 service they have.

I've signed up with walla.com and it seems to be fine so far despite a few bugs. I think that they're only trying to attract some of the people who can't find gmail invites. I highly doubt that they have the resources to keep up with google and will probably downsize their accounts before google is released.

Well, the point is if those companies will have the "power" (shall we say resources?, shall we say money?) to maintain their offer if they obtain many clients.
When you have hundreds of clients that's something "easy", but when we talk about thousands things are different...

I totally agree with this thought: "I highly doubt that they have the resources to keep up google and will probably downsize their accounts before google is released."

Well, well, well, we're talking about 1 giga accounts, and there's another one which says it offers "2048 MB FREE account"...
Have a look at it, and if you register and use it please tell us, I won't do it (even though I got no Gmail account yet).

Yes, nowadays I don't need 1 gig of space in an email account (who knows in the future ), but I've seen Gmail in use and I really liked it.
And so, I don't mind waiting for it
