The history of invintations

I personally have my own gmail account, because I was invited from a friend, but I would like to know where the source of these invintations comes from. Does google give them to you after you have created an account? Do you have to be best friends with the CEO to get them? My friend said that you have to be invited by google or something, but what does that involve? I don't really have any idea of where the invintations come from, anyone have an idea?

Oh and also, I have seen nothing on the site that says when they are planning to go public.

(as you can see I do not know much about the gmail subject in general)

As been said in another thread, it is supposed to be a script which randomly assigns invitations to diferent accounts.
But it seems they have stopped running that script, and so we have the present lack of invitations...

when you say randomly assigns invitations, do you mean sends invintations to existing gmail accounts for them to give out?

Yes, a script made by google sends invitations random to existing gmail accounts. The owners of these existing gmail accounts invite others to join gmail.

Yeah, they are given to existing Gmail users. Most of the original users who got invites got theirs through Blogger.

I can't remember where I saw it but I read that google has stopped giving invites to new accounts. I was just wondering if this was true.

Yes, no invites for about a month now. Are they gearing up for the public release, or are they under the restrictions of their quiet period?

Yeah, i havent received any invites for awhile now but when i was getting them i would get a huge amount. my account would get like 6 and my friends and parents/sister (who have nothing to do with theirs) would give me their invites. i think i gave away about 70 on kevinrose.com in all.

i think they stopped running the script cuz i heard they had reached the amount of beta testers they needed.

that sucks. i think there might be more invitations if people didnt go to ebay to sell them right away. i wouldnt even consider buying one for any amount of money.
