Yahoo! copies Google with 1GB email storage

...but only in China...

Yahoo! has increased the storage limit of its free email service tenfold in China, but users elsewhere may not get to enjoy the same benefit anytime soon.

In a statement on its website, the company said it has boosted the storage capacity for its free mail service from 100MB to 1GB, matching the storage of rival Google's upcoming Gmail offering.

While Gmail's trials are confined to a select group, Yahoo!'s upgrade will be extended to all existing and new users of its mail service in China. However, subscribers must first log on to Yahoo's instant messenger service and add other users to their contact lists to qualify for the 1GB of storage.

A representative of Yahoo! South East Asia said there are "no immediate plans" to offer a similar upgrade to users in other countries.

The move marks the latest attempt by a major search giant to garner a greater share of China's booming internet market, which, according to the China internet Network Information Centre, is expected to exceed 100 million users by year's end.

I'm not quite sure but, isn't there in China where political authorities determine which Internet contents are suitable or not?
Apart form this, I got no idea on why just in China...

well google really isn't a major worry in china as i believe the government has blocked it from public use. i think i read somewhere that they use the google mirror so they can still use it to search. i can see it now "The Revolution will be powered by Google!"

it doesn't really matter now though, because we have the chance at gmailo, which from what i see, is much better than my yahoo mail. also, although yahoo hasn't increased their mail limit much, people can now store 100 mb (in canada and usa), while hotmail is only up to 50 mb

Yes, it's true, but you have to use the yahoo AIM and add one friends at least. then you can activate the 1G email box. Only works in china. It seems yahoo want grab the chinese market before google finaly enter china.

Thats good stragity on yahoos part. Get millions of people in china to use yahoo, so that other email cant get alot of people. Most people only use one account, and their first one is usally their last one. 100 mb doesnt seem like alot to the 1 GB of gmail, and all those other 3rd party 1 GB mail companies. But i think 100 mb would be good for most people. I personally would rather have a GB of storage from google's gmail than any 1 GB and up email service. Still waiting gmail to give more invites so i can get one. To sum it up, this is good on the part of yahoo.
