I don't like conversations - can I disable them?

Hi there,
I don't find any real value in conversations. In fact, they sometimes get in the way. For instance, if I have a new message and I leave it unread, and somebody in the conversation sends another message, I tend to miss this further message because there are no obvious visual clues to suggest that I have new mail.
Also I think it's too smart about working out which bits are history and which ones are new things, and sometimes it gets it wrong (false positives!). I can't really bring any examples about this, but it has happened to me.

Anyway, is it possible to turn off conversations and have the traditional message-by-message interface?

Thanks

I see

Try searching all the settings in Gmail if you haven't already.

But THERE ARE clues that there are new messages, it's the number on the left which says:

(2), or (3).. or how many conversations exist in that e-mail. This way if you just received one e-mail, it says 2, and if you get 4 e-mails it says 4. I think that's a good clue.

Uhm... not so good if you have to remember all the numbers and notice when they change. It could be many numbers to remember and numbers that change all the time.
Thanks anyway.

:)

lol Do you receive as much e-mails in one conversation?

Anyway, after all the customer is always right You have a point, if you don't like the conversation system Google should make the option for you available. It wouldn't cost them much, but maybe it won't be so helpful for you in the future when you search old e-mails. They will be scattered.

Regards,
Arto

That's something they have on their little suggestion page, is to disable the conversation threading feature.
