Mac Gmail Widget Problems

Pardon me if this has been previously posted as the search item seems to bring up everything but forum posts.

Anyway, for the last few weeks my Gmail widget on my Mac hasn't been able to connect to Gmail - it just keeps spinning.

I've tried reinstalling various versions, and re-entering ID/pswd, etc. but nothing seems to work.

Since this is also happening to a number of my Mac Google widget using friends, I assume something has changed on Google's side, any suggestions for a fix or updated widget access?

Thanks for your time and help in this matter.

Does the widget have the necessary firewall permissions?

No firewall(s) used and no changes were made to any of the routers before the widget(s) quit working.

A few questions to further help:
  • Is there a 'settings' menu/tab/option anywhere?
  • Have you checked the POP/IMAP ports/settings are correct? See here.
  • Is it trying to connect through a defunct proxy?
  • Is it the official Gmail widget?

I don't have a Mac so I can't help you directly, only point you in the rough direction. Hopefully someone who can help properly will be along soon.

Hmmm, how can I make this clearer?

It's an official Google Gmail Mac widget ( from the Apple Widget site ).

There are two Gmail widgets ( both official I guess ), one just tells the unread msg. count and connects ( mine, "Gmail Inbox.wdgt" from Jan. '08, from the Apple site mentioned above ), and the other show parts of msgs, etc. ( from the Google widget site ). Neither connects!

As far as I know there are at least three of us this is happening to using the same widget, and nothing on our end has changed - it just stopped connecting one day.

I need either another Mac widget user to say theirs works ( somehow ) or someone from the Google Gmail Mac Widget team to say it works, or that they've figured out a fix.

Thanks for your time and help in this matter.

Same Issue Here!

I have also not been able to use the Widget properly. It has only been within the past month. Please help!?!

I have tried un-installing and re-installing several times... i gave up and have been depending on my Blackberry to inform me about E-Mail.

Thanks,

Andrew

I had a quick look on Google Groups and it seems a lot of people are having conflicting issues with the Gmail Widget and Safari.

Some have suggested the following temporary fix until Google/Apple rectifies the problem:
  • Open Safari
  • Login to gmail (with "Remember me on this computer" ticked)
  • Load the Gmail Widget

(Source: Google Groups)

If this doesn't solve your problem you could try the Google Notifier for Mac, available here.

That Fixed It

I experienced a blank gmail widget for about 2 days. And those steps fixed it.
  • Open Safari
  • Login to gmail (with "Remember me on this computer" ticked)
  • Load the Gmail Widget
Thanks

Yep, tried the above, all it did in my case was stop the Widget from trying to access Google ( i.e.: no more spinning icon in the upper right corner ).

Thanks for your time and help in this matter.
