Discard Button
This has been on my mind for a while. The Discard Drafts Button is in a very dangerous position and should be moved asap. I use gmail to store all my drafts, and I can't tell you how often when my heart has been in my mouth as I have accidentally just pressed the button. I think it should be more unobtrusive, I'm sure Google have a way of retrieving any info I lost accidentally, but I don't want to discover it the hard way

Surely it’s not that much of a threat if you actually have to select the messages you want to delete then click the Discard Drafts Button!

I've never really got used to the "feel" of web-based mail. I'll use it to check my account if I'm online, read newsletters, and fiddle the filters, but I like to download any ongoing correspondence to my POP3 mail client.
I'm used to it, and have long-ingrained habits of sorting, and making copies and back-ups; the better to avoid that "did I leave the stove on?" feeling. |

You really do?
Hey lugave,
Are you really so absent-minded? Do you actually check the boxes and press Discard Drafts? I think you ought to be just a little more careful, and then there won't be any problems. P.S. If you think this post is insulting to you, then I'm very sorry. I'd like to tell you that this is just my opinion and it really doesn't count very much, unless you take it into your head to follow my advice. |

I think he has a pretty good point. The designers probably didn't take into account the way that he, like some people, use the interface; and it would probably be a good idea if it wasn't quite so easy to make what could be a very inconvenient mistake. |

How do you define absent-minded?
I agree to the fact that we are all absent-minded some time or the other, but then, don't you think it a bit too funny when a person accidentally checks the boxes (in the Drafts section of GMail) and clicks the Discard Drafts button, without even noticing what he's doing? Do you do that yourself? I think that's a bit amazing. But maybe what Elliot said was right - Google could offer a warning prompt asking whether you realy want to delete the drafts or not. |

If you don't worry, it's not a problem.
Well, like I mentioned in an earlier post, I don't use the web interface much (and I don't keep a lot of drafts on hand, anyway), so no. It wouldn't be a problem for me.
Could I see a potential problem, for someone that does? What side does the toast land on, if you drop it? It wouldn't be a 'critical update', but it might be a bit of fine-tuning that they could do in response to suggestion. |
