Is there a setting that disables GTalk while viewing the mail window

I have the Gtalk client/widget, if i'm currently chatting to someone and decide to check a new mail message, then the person i'm chatting with makes a reply, it comes up in the mail window, sometimes i miss what they say as the pop up disappears after a while.

It would be good to have the option of turning off chat in the email window if you have the client.

Also, i know a few companies that won't let you read emails if you use gmail, possibly because it's an 'active' link, would disabling chat in the email window resolve this problem ?

I don't want to be invisible when using the chat widget, i just don't want the chat to appear on gmail if i happen to open it wnile chatting.
