GMail better than Outlook?

Quote:
Interesting post from Jeremy Zawodny at Yahoo... He writes about GMail, "Like Flickr, it's on a very short list of Internet applications that are at least as good as their desktop counterparts." While neatly getting a nice plug for Yahoo's Flickr in there, he gives Google a nice pat on the back.

And makes a great point....

Although I have some concerns about the privacy issues around GMail, it is applications like this that must make Microsoft shiver. As soon as network applications become as easy and fast as desktop apps, the days of the personal computer (and the need for a hard-drive and thus MS Windows) are numbered. Why store things locally if storing them on the network is secure, less expensive and easy to search? Keeping applications and documents on the network makes them universally accessible -- so there is no more forgetting your files or any reason to lug your laptop around with you.

Finally, why buy anything from Microsoft if all you need is a browser to access your applications and documents from anywhere?

Google's mission statement: organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Hmmm... universally accessible. There may be more to this statement than meets the eye.

Consider Google Desktop Search. I think the next step is not only centralized information (on servers, accessed through the internet through clients), but true self-publishing, served right from your own computer. This includes both public and private information (secure). When you can easily share and search your own computer, and access the shared resources of others, you'll have much more flexibility in what you can do and where you can go.

Gmail account for everyone in the world

You know the saying that you're only 10 people away at maximum to anyone else in the world... well if we each get 50 invites, or more, depending on what they give you. Does that mean that there will be enough gmail invites for the whole world??? its just a thought! I think it would be cool if everyone who had access to the internet also had a gmail account. The problem of what to call all of these people is another thing, maybe we should use numbering! we can all be barcoded and that would refer to our gmail account, and maybe our blog too! Not saying google is big brother but it would be an idea, see all, hear all, and the center of all communications!
