It's really pointless to block by e-mail address anyways since spammers don't use the real e-mail address.

Yes, don't waste your time with fake, or disposable addresses. Better to look for things like keywords to base the filter on.

spamassassin for gmail

Maybe we need something like spamassassin for gmail. But i feel the best thing to do is to keep reporting the junk to google. I used to get junk to my inbox, and i kept clicking 'Report As Spam' and after a while it starting going to my junk mail. It must use some sort of context checking. Gmail is my first account that hasn't been flooded with spam. Before this i had a very short email address with iol and i'd get about 100 to 150 junk emails a day, with no way of surpressing it. Plus i'd a hotmail address... with 2Mb of storage that just wasn't enough. When gmail came along i was delight! and still am! just report it. Google uses Exim i believe, with is running on linux so they probably have some sort of spamassassin running...

When you're in your Gmail account, click on "Create a New Filter". It doesn't matter if you're not ready to, you can always cancel, or delete it.

Any filter will basically give you two sets of things to do: specify what to look for, and then, what to do with it. You have a few options to look over in each category.

Say you've got one guy that's being a pain. You enter his address, and then make the filter send him straight to the trash.

If you get lots of spam from different addresses, try to look for some common words that only those will contain, like "Viagra", or "sale", or whatever. Use the test button to see what mail will be affected by what filter.

You can also use filters to organize your mail, like making a "business" label to apply to business contacts as soon as they come in, etc.
