claim to gmail.com

I know IIIR have the initial claim to the name gmail but i can't see where that name was actually founded? like if i created davekeoghmail and someone else got there first i'm sure i could win it back especially if its found out that the name plays no relevance in the service. Personally i think its just a company trying to cash in on something that someone else wants. Maybe a court will side with the other company, but to be honest i think it will side with google

I wouldn't be so sure. Domain name squatting is a pretty big speculative market.
Just about any name that might be worth something is grabbed up, and some fairly famous people
have spent big money; and still not been able to aquire rights to their own name dot-coms.
When there's nothing but a spam site parked on them waiting for hits.

So if you plan on getting (even more) famous, you'd better register that name, now.

What if I'm a UK user who already has a Gmail address? Will I also need to change that address?
No, this change doesn’t affect existing Gmail addresses. For now, our plan is only to issue @googlemail.com addresses to new users. Trust that we will do the best we can to offer all our users a reliable and consistent email experience.

Well, the domain @googlemail.com is applied on new users only! So there is no need to worry about.

Hope Google will change this for new UK users.

Noone will need an @googlemail.com address.

Firstly, everyone who doesn't already have Gmail will not change - I've asked loads of people.

Secondly, just say that you live in the USA and you get an @gmail.com adress. I tried this on hotmail to get an @hotmail.com addresss and it worked.

Nobody needs to worry.
