Emoticons or other improvements for Gmail

I think it would be great if Gmail had a built-in set of emoticons - anyone know any other problems or possible improvements?

I'll send a list to Google with all the suggestions (well, sensible ones anyway )

Thanks,

Oli

Yeah, I see what you mean - I fell for that trick once and now I get loads of pop-ups giving me "free emoticons" that I don't want.

I meant a set like you get on MSN Messenger - where you can create/add/modify emoticons and store them.

One suggestion I will put forward regards filters.

When I create a filter so that all messages from a certain contact will be given a label, I have a problem -

When I type in the e-mail address, it doesn't come up with a list of contacts containg the characters you have typed (like it normally does when writing an e-mail).

Yes, but there is the 'test filter' button, that shows you which mails would be effected by it. That's what I usually use to create a filter, before deleting anything.

Yes, there is one 'emoticon' site that is notorious for that. If you get those pop-ups, you probably have spyware resident on your system, now.
You should run something like AdAware, to clean that up.

As for emoticons; my personal opinion is that they're kind of pointless in regular email, as they rely on the software that the recipeint is using. I usually just read mail in Plain Text, so they look like random clutter.

Oh my. Mondine double-posting - that's not a sight you get to see too often.

Coming back to the topic, I think that there should be emoticons in GMail.

Yes, and no. Two separate replies addressing separate issues in two different posts.
I considered combining the two into one post, but rejected the idea as too cumbersome.

For one thing, if someone was to continue either conversation by quoting my post, it would require of them a great deal of editing, to separate the one issue that they were commenting on, in order exclude an unwieldy amount of material.

In a case like this, I believe it a considerate act to make specific, on-topic posts. Even if there are 'two in a row'. In some cases, common sense comes before the 'letter of the law'.

Sigh. You're right again (according to me).
