I could also recommend an email program called Foxmail. It will pop as many accounts as you want, it has a pleasant interface, properly composes and replies to, HTML messages (which was #1 on the list of my requirements), allows you to filter out the spam, and it's absolutely free. The new version also supports RSS feeds (same as Web Clips on Gmail).
The program itself can be downloaded from here (version 6 beta 2) or here (version 5). If you end up downloading the new beta version, make sure to visit this website and get a localization file that will translate the program into English. It's really good, I have been using it for a very long time and it's (at the very least) worth trying. |

Sure, OE is fine if you have it configured in a secure manner.
If not, it's still a Welcome mat for every wandering virus and trojan. Unfortunately, many OE users don't seem to know the difference. |

There are several sensible precautions. The first is to turn the Preview Pane off (you can add a "preview" button to the toolbar to toggle it on and off). Otherwise, change (uncheck) the setting from "Automatically download message when viewing in the Preview Pane".
It depends on your personal preferences, too, but I use the settings (under Tools, Options, Read), to read all messages in Plain Text. I don't particularly want to look at smilies and fancy stationery in mail, and this setting is the most secure to keep embedded nasties from auto-running, or triggering web beacons. (You can always change the setting if there is something you want to see.) Still, in general, I always preview my mail with a POP3 checker, and delete garbage right off the server, before it gets anywhere near my machine. |

If the setting is actually plain text, and it's not just a coincidence that that's all you happen to have been sent.
You probably have a degree of safety because Gmail will filter any executables that it recognizes, but I wouldn't rely on it exclusively. Or spam filtering. Most people that are infected by mailed trojans have opened something that has come from a spoofed address, very often seeming to come from a known source. They can actually be from a trusted source, if that person has become unknowingly infected. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of reformatting. |

How about a web-based email client?
MyEmail FoxMail is a good program, I used it several years ago, but had problems with the documentation. I'm sure it is more widely available now, I believe it is from China. |
