Generally speaking, everyone likes Google. Still generally speaking, everyone hates Microsoft deep down inside. Or, like me, not so deep down inside. Therefore, if the service is from Google, it already has a huge advantage in ligitimacy over one from Microsoft.

Well, I think that Gmail should remain invitation-oriented, but, looking from another side... In Poland (don't konw how it looks abroad, but think that the same) on most public forums, in topic about Internet or about everything (you know, these "Hyde Park" named topics where you can talk about everything and nothing), you can find some thread named "GMail", and although it should be a discussion about GMail, it becomes just a big trash bin filled up with posts like "My email is somemail@somesite.com, please send me an invitation". You can even BUY GMail invitations in online auction centre, for examle Allegro (it's like eBay). So, however the GMail isn't public, you can easily gain access to it. So what good is keeping this invitations mess, if even now it makes no difference to the stream of new users flowing to GMail?
Wheeze... I've finally told my mind. Gosh |
