Gmail upload speeds?

hello I am new to the whole gmail concept, I am about to sign up for an account and thought it would be usefull to upload around 1 gig of my most personal files and programs so they can be accessable from anwhere on the go but I am wondering if it would be worth the pain of the super slow upload speeds? I know most of this are possibly all has to do with my uload bandwith through my service provider but i am wondering how much if any has to do with gmail?

well, using GMail as ur network is nice..
best bet for that is the GMailFS, which literally makes GMail to b one of ur network drives

but if I wer u, I wudn't go for this.. even wit a broadband connection, I'd rather carry around all my important files in a pen drive rather than being at the mercy of the network..

but if ur idea is to use it just as a backup, then go on..

Yes, the uploads are not quick. I'll take a while.
I use a similar shell, the Gmail Drive which creates a virual drive of your Gmail account that looks like a local drive.

Most of the time, I'll transfer copies of my saved files to an "Upload" folder, and just keep dragging files over to the Gmail folder inbetween other tasks.

The file sizes are as in email, with the maximum being 10mbs.

A gigabyte could take along time to upload:
- 10MB upload limit each time --> you would need 100 uploads of that size for a gigabyte --> if each one takes 30 seconds, then total=3000 seconds --> 50 minutes.
After doing the calculation I realised it was not all that much time, but 50 mins uploading files would be very boring .
P.S.Is there not something in the license agreement for gmail that says that you are not allowed to use gmail as a storage medium?

Yes it's boring work. That's why I have it set up so I can do it a little at a time, while doing other things.
(It's particularly dull when I first have to split large files before I can upload them.) But it's worth it to me, to have the secure, mobile storage.
And I've read the TOS pretty carefully a number of times. I've not seen anything that would restrict using it for your own personal storage.

i agree using a thumb drive over an online site. this way you wouldn't have to be at the mercy of the site or the network that you might be accessing from.

Carrying files in a Jump drive is still the best option. Particularly more if the data is very crucial and is not worth risking at the hands of free-email providers.
