Password protected e-mails

What do you guys think about the idea for password-protected e-mails? On my computer it signs me in automatically, so having a password for my e-mail does little good if someone where to get on my computer. They could see everything on there, including e-mails with private information in them (passwords, credit card numbers, etc.). I think it would be a cool, if not useful, feature to have.

If I did that, then I'd have to type in my password (20+ characters) every time I wanted to just see if I had any mail, which I tend to do at least 5 times daily. It would become very irritating. The original idea of gmail was to not have to ever delete anything, but in doing so you are creating a huge database of you. If someone where to somehow get into my computer, they could all but clone me with what is in my gmail account, but I don't want to delete it. Before gmail I kept a legal pad filled with lists of passwords, usernames, and various other information. Reguarding the link you posted, I have no idea what that is. I clicked the first 4 links, read through them, and still do not understand completely what it is or how it works.

Why do you have your credit card number in your e-mail box anyways? E-mail is very unsecure so even having it in an e-mail is insecure in itself. Just lock your computer if you aren't there. And since the e-mail didn't come with the feature of please enter your password, that option isn't available. PGP is useless in your case as well. Just login and logoff, simple as that.

I don't see much difference. Enter a password for emails, enter a password for the account...
Anyway, as for logging, there are a lot of freeware programs you can use to program a couple of hotkeys to do that, that wouldn't be obvious to an intruder.

I agree, don't leave any valuable information in your email account, especially credit card info. That's why I purge my eMail, cause you have to assume someone is always creeping around. If you have some mail with important things in it... hit Reply, then edit it and send them back to yourself in another obscure account.

I don't like the idea of making the emails password protected. The whole reason that i use Firefox is because it keeps all of my passwords saved (i think they do a much better job than IE explorer). If there is data that is that sensitive in an email, then it should be modified or deleted

I think you're right, having to type your password in for every email would be annoying, but i think if there were an option that would be really great.

If you could choose to make some emails encrypted like that, I think it would be useful and overall a good tool to have. Some emails are just average, conversations with not much importance but ther might be others that you want to protect from prying eyes so to speak.

Then the option to have an email password protected would be extremely handy.
