Why it is that when your language on your Gmail/Google Mail settings is set to English(UK) you do not have these new features.

But when you change it to English(US) you have them.

Wierd?

Not wierd at all. A lot of companies only let certain countries use certain features.

Oh I don't know...in that case they would rather check via IP, not language preference which can be easily manipulated...
Perhaps it's just slight delay with translations, etc. :P

I have access to their translation pages. They are a little behind in the new feature's translations to most languages. I didn't look specifically for the UK translations, but thats likely the reason.
