Email application extension for GMail?

Hi there... does anyone know if they plan to provide outside email program access for gmail.

I imagine since they provide targeted ads in the web version if they plan to have a POP mail support you will probably have to pay for the service.

Any one heard anything? Or may be the admins know something?
