Mail.com Alert program

I was wondering if gmail has in the works or at least thought about a program like mail.com's email alert. It shows a tray icon that when you have new mail it changes the picture and you can have a sound played if you want. I used to use Mail.com and really liked the alert program so i was hopeing gmail might get something like it.
