Google Christmas Gift 2006: Digital photo frame

I just received a Digital photo frame from Google, a gift for certain AdSense publishers.

Thanks, Google! And Merry Christmas to all!

December 3 Update: I went home this weekend and picked up the frame to bring it to school with me. Here are a few more details:

The manual calls it "Digital photo frame GTA-316".

It supports JPG pictures and MP3, WMA, and WAV audio files. It supports ASF videos (MP4) and has a built-in microphone for recording WAV files. Its 3.6" TFT LCD can display digital photos and AVI videos with 960x240 resolution and 16-bit color.

It has internal memory and an SD card slot. I took the SD card out of my digital camera, plugged it in, and it started displaying my photos right away!

It draws less than 230 mA current, uses 4 AAA batteries (included) or USB 5V or AC/DC power adapter. It also acts as an SD card reader at USB 1.1 speed.

I haven't used it exhaustively, but it's worked fine for me so far. However, around the web, users are reporting problems (unconfirmed):

- Died after 1 day of use
- File errors
- Converter software won't accept anything touched by an editor; raw images work; battery light won't go away even when plugged in with AC adapter
- Also called GRA 316
- Pictures must be saved with Microsoft Windows Paint (MS Paint) as JPG (Photoshop won't work); to update, you have to turn the unit off then on
- Locked up while trying to download a jpg
- Some have had no problems; can drag and drop images
- Included batteries lasted about 30 min. (I haven't yet run mine down)

Windows identifies it as a Sunplus SPCA536 USB device. It seems to work only with either the internal memory or memory card; not both simultaneously. It requires reboots when something malfunctions (which is not hard to do). Someone needs to hack Linux into this thing.

I have two questions:
- What is the "Lock" option in the image menu?
- What's the difference between the "USB Mode" Setup options? Choices are "USB" or "U-DISK" (clarified as USB DISK in manual). No further details are provided. U-DISK is default.

Update: Its internal memory capacity is 24 MB. Not bad. Still, I'm confused on why it only works with the SD card or the internal memory, not both. It requires a restart to switch between the two.
- It automatically shuts down if you insert or remove an SD card. If you're inserting a card, it restarts automatically.

I found the key to making this thing work: The Windows XP Image Resizer PowerToy. I exported 131 images from Picasa, which didn't work when loaded directly, and then resized them with the Image Resizer to 960x240 (in one click). I then drag-and-dropped the images into the picture frame. The results are pretty good!

Considering the people who've had problems with the frame, I propose the following solution for Google: have two lists, one of people who just want the cash value of the toy, and those who really want the gadget itself, with the Google logo on it. Put me on the second list. I love this stuff, even though it does not work perfectly. That just gives me a challenge and makes things all the more interesting!

There's just one eBay auction with bids, which has it up to $51.00 with 4 days 19 hours remaining. So I suppose it's worth at least that much.

My guess is that it runs under a different model number. Every reference to GTA-316 seems to refer to Google's version.
