do i only make money when people click on the ads, or can i get paid for every thousand page views? thanks

It depends.

Usually AdSense pays per click, but you can also get ads that pay per impression. Try to read about 'site targeting' in Google's help to understand this. Anyway to get Ads per impression, you'll need advertisers targeting your site directly.
