SEOMoz is one of the best authorities out there on increasing traffic and general search engine optimization. I have this post in particular bookmarked. I look back on it every so often and make sure I'm doing everything right.

hi with links,, aim your ANCHOR tag, in a high search / low competition area. ie: <a href="http://yourdomain.com">ANCHOR TAG HERE</a>
its nearly pointless getting links without targeting it properly.

i can have blog.com and optimize it fully, and be no2, get links with "blog" and i would be no1 as soon as i got more anchor tags with anchor tag "BLOG" than no1. TO check out your competition google: allinanchor:your anchor tag

he who has the most EXACT anchor tags,, is no1,,, second most, no2.. etc

have a chat on a forum or two, every major forum,
ie google, digitalpoint seomoz namepros etc..
will drive 10-30 people a month free.

you dont need to be nice and interesting every post either, sometimes being an angry ant will drive twice as much traffic, Just be careful you don't offend "everyone"

write good content. lots and lots of good honest unique content with double your traffic every month if you keep at it.

As for me, my primary focus for traffic in is SEO, it is what I have built my sites off of, some get only a few hundred visitors a month, and the top one gets close to 100,000 unique visitors a month. SEO works, and is here to stay.
