Google Impressions?

What counts as an impression? I have been running Adwords for about a week and our CTR is pretty low (0.03 %) and trying to figure out why.

Are Impressions measured by the # of times a keyword that is searched OR is it the amount of times the ad actually shows?

For instance, if there are 20 advertisers competing for a keyword and my company is ranked 12th in a given search “paper plates”, we would not show up for the 1st page. Do 2nd page results count as an impression?

Question: In below example, what would show as an “Impression” in the Google reports? How is this related to Impression share?

Example:
Paper plates searched 50 times
My ad appears on page 20 times

Is Impressions 20 or 50?
Is Impression share 40% (20/50)

Thanks

An impression is the number of times your ad is shown, not the call ups....if your ad was on page two when a keyword search was done then its not an impression....if the user went to page two then that would be an impression ....hope this helps...

In this cases impressions would be 20. Impressions share is something else.

Impressions share is: number of times your ad was shown / number of times your ad COULD have been shown.

I've still not really worked out why and ad would not be shown - Google explains it is to with your ad's quality score I think. Increasing quality score should mean your ad is shown more often - however a low CTR will affect how often you are shown since low CTR will mean a lower quality score.

There are lots of articles on the internet about how to increase CTR. My top tips would be...
  1. Make sure your ad text is REALLY revelant to your keyword - include the keyword as much as you can in the ad text (especially in the headline) since this will increase your quality score.
  2. You can run two ads at the same time - copy/paste your original and make some subtle (or big) changes. In your campaign settings choose the 'Rotate ads evenly' option and Google will show both ads. After about 30 clicks see which does the best. Then pause the worst one, copy/paste the best one and make another. Keep doing this and you should see your CTR increase.

Think that was a better explanation
