I think I have resolved the issue of my browser starting up spontaneously and trying to browse to a bogus site: www.example.net/some/place. (Sorry, the subject line is wrong, it's .net, not .com) After finding several other people with this exact problem, we discovered that nearly all of us had just recently installed GDS. So yesterday I uninstalled GDS and the problem seems to have disappeared.

I regret losing the usefulness of Google Desktop, but until they fix the problem, I'm unwilling to put up with having my browser hijacked once or twice a day and going to a nonexistent web site!
