Cool Google Desktop 5.5 beta released

New features include the ability to run Desktop gadgets in iGoogle, a better-looking Quick Search box, and improved Microsoft Outlook search functionality.

Desktop gadgets like the virtual flower pot, wireless signal meter, and media player remote can be used on iGoogle.

More info on Google Desktop at desktop.google.com

Neat stuff! If only there were a standard to be integrated across all platforms. I don't think that'll happen, though. So take your pick between Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and Apple - they all have their own gadgets implementations!

Porting gadgets from one platform to another could be a pretty lucrative business...

System restore kills google gadgets

I did a system restore and my google gadgets sidebar stopped working (e.g. accessing the internet). I would have done an uninstall-install but don't want to lose the desktop index. The sidebar says "loading" but nothing happens.
